Chitwan is a year-round destination, but the best wildlife sightings and most comfortable weather come during the cooler, drier months from October to March.
October to March: Peak Season
This is the ideal time to visit. The weather is mild, the skies are clear, and the tall monsoon grass has been cut, making wildlife easier to spot. Animals gather around rivers and waterholes, and the chances of seeing rhinos, tigers, and elephants are highest. Lodges and safaris should be booked well in advance.
April to June: Hot but Rewarding
Temperatures can exceed 40°C in the Terai. The heat is intense, but the dry landscape draws animals to the remaining water sources. Early morning safaris are the most comfortable. This season sees fewer tourists, so it is a good time for quieter visits and better deals.
July to September: Monsoon
Heavy rainfall makes some trails muddy and rivers swollen. Safaris may be limited or cancelled during floods. However, the park is lush and green, and the landscape is at its most beautiful. Birdlife is also active during this period. This is the least busy season.
